This issue of Housing Facts & Findings focuses on the role of states in response to housing, economic development, and other community issues.

Savvy governors and other state leaders are recognizing that housing is interconnected with other critical issues: transportation, economic development, environmental protection, and social services. Governors from coast to coast are implementing a broad array of promising strategies to promote affordable housing. Pennsylvania Gov. Edward Rendell shows how investing in affordable housing is a key component of his state's comprehensive economic strategy.
 
Cities are engines of economic growth, and states whose cities can attract educated, amenity-seeking workers have a competitive advantage. Recent changes in the federal role and devolution of responsibility to state governments offers new opportunities for states to strengthen their cities.
 
A recommendation of the bipartisan Land Use Leadership Council, Michigan's Cool Cities program aims to revitalize neighborhoods and create mixed-use, mixed-income, high-density, pedestrian-friendly communities. The goal is to create quality of place that will attract knowledge workers and high-quality employers and stimulate economic development.
